The Challenge

This £7 million project aimed to complete a sensitive restoration and extension of the Old School House building on the site of the Methodist College, Belfast. The project aimed to improve the educational facilities for pupils and teachers with two new double-storey extensions providing additional classroom accommodation for 1,800 students. However, it was also important to the client and architect to preserve the original features of this 150-year-old, Grade B1 listed building and important local landmark situated in the Queen’s Conservation Area. This included a Tudor style entrance and ornate oak-lined reception and balustrade. After discussions with the appointed architect, the Limelite Breathable Plaster System was recommended and chosen for this project.

Our Solution

The Limelite Renovating Plaster system is specially formulated for use on traditional and listed buildings and is independently accredited by the BBA. Limelite Plasters have been trusted by conservation professionals on other sensitive and high-profile restoration projects including the recent refurbishment and redevelopment of Hull’s Maritime Museum. As well as delivering the required appearance and aesthetics the breathable nature of Limelite plasters would also help to protect existing materials in the building. Limelite plasters do not absorb moisture and allow release of existing moisture from substrates. This helps to protect building materials like timber beams and stone or metal features from mould and corrosion. They are also proven to help ambient moisture control in sensitive environments like galleries and museums.

Results and Benefits

Choosing Limelite plaster helped with the fast, efficient delivery of this project. Limelite plasters dry quickly, and additional coats of plaster or decorative finishes can be applied in as little as 24 hours. They are supplied pre blended and ready to use and are also lightweight and easy to finish. Elements of the system can also be spray applied, allowing for work to be completed rapidly. The tough, impact resistant finish of the High Impact Finishing Plaster would also help to protect the walls from damage and maintain their appearance. Limelite plasters delivered a high-quality finish on this project, which went on to win a prestigious RICS Regional Heritage Project Award.
